How I Spent My Day in Hong Kong

On the way to Siargao I had a 10 1/2 hour layover in Hong Kong. Thinking this was a great opportunity, I made a plan to get out of the airport for a few hours. But it almost didn't happen. I arrived at the airport and suddenly fearful thoughts ran through my head: what if I get totally lost? what if I miss my flight? wouldn't staying in the airport just be easier? But, garnering all of my resolve, I got on the train, heading to Victoria's Peak on Hong Kong Island. The train was the easy part. I had what seemed like simple directions from the train station to the tram I needed to take up the mountain, and after only a few wong turns I finally made it. The weather was overcast but by the time I got to the top thick grey clouds were were moving in and enveloped the mountain. Within about 10 minutes the rain was torrential (even by Vancouver standards) and there were no sights to be seen. So, I wandered around, had a latte and decided to leave the peak. Not realizing that the tram made a stop before getting to the bottom, I got off at the wrong stop. So, beginning to walk the rest of the way down, I quickly became soaked totally through. I flagged down a taxi to take me to the train station deciding to forfeit wandering around the city, since the rain showed no signs of letting up. By the time I arrived back at the airport I was still totally wet but never happier to see the blow hand drier in the bathroom. Usually I don't like those. So, I stood in front of the drier drying my sweatshirt, shoes, socks and as best I could, my jeans, to some interesting reactions by people walking through. It was an interesting day. I am back at the airport much earlier than I intended but the trek was not a waste. As I was drying my clothes I thought about what I learned. Here is what came to mind:
  1. Don't let fear stop me from doing something. I was a little nervous venturing out of the airport on my own but am glad that I didn't miss the opportunity to do something new and beyond my comfort zone.
  2. Don't let a frustrating situation get the best of me. Walking in the pouring rain did not bring out the best of me, but I quickly and intentionally changed my attitude to accept the situation and put those feelings aside rather than wallowing in them.
  3. Don't miss the opportunity to laugh with people. Standing by the dryer, holding up my socks was apparently amusing to many. Making a connection was as simple as smiling, making a comment about the rain and finding the humour in the situation.

That was my day in Hong Kong...something that is now a part of me.

That sounds like such a fun day! Rain and all. The downpours are so much more than you would ever see in Vancouver. I'm glad you got out and had the adventure. I love picturing you standing by the blow dryer....it's a great story and you had some laughs about it. Can't wait to hear more!!!!
